Two out of seven planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal projects in the country arel on track to be completed next year, according to the Department of Energy (DOE).

DOE Undersecretary Felix William Fuenteballa said AG&P and Osaka Gas’ project is expected to be completed by second quarter next year while the one being developed by FGEN LNG together with Tokyo Gas is poised to be finished by third quarter 2022.

“Although FGen’s papers are more complete, they are on their way to be online, commercially available by September or third quarter of next year whereas AG&P… I was informed they are on track for the second quarter next year. However, their documents with other agencies for their permits are still for completion,” Fuentebella said in a virtual briefing organized by the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines last week.

The private sector is very active in developing LNG terminals as the Malampaya gas resource is seen to be fully depleted by around 2027.

The other five developers eyeing their own LNG terminals are Excelerate Energy with Topline Energy and Power Development Corp.; Batangas Clean Energy Inc. with LCT Energy and Resources Inc.; Energy World Gas Operations Philippines Inc.; Shell Energy Philippines Inc.; and Vires Energy Corp.

All proposed LNG projects are located in Batangas except for the one being developed by Energy World which is in Quezon Province. – Jed Macapagal
