The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is set to begin the construction of 11 flagship infrastructure projects this year, including the EDSA rehabilitation, its secretary Manuel Bonoan said yesterday.
Bonoan, in an interview on PTV-4, said the big-ticket projects lined up for construction this year include the P57.7-billion Panay-Guimaras Bridge, the P219-billion Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge (BCIB), the P23-billion Samal Island-Davao City Connector project, the P76.4-billion 4th Cebu-Mactan Bridge, the Calamba to Sucat expressway and; a portion of the Laguna Lakeshore Road Network project worth P175 billion.
Bonoan said the main two game-changing projects that will start construction this year are the Panay-Guimaras Bridge and the BCIB, which will be considered as the second longest bay bridge in the world once completed.
“We will start the construction within the first semester this year (Bataan-Cavite Bridge) and we have bid (out) the construction that will start within the first semester this year. We will bid the other sections, sequential implementation,” Bonoan said.
Last year, DPWH implemented over 21,000 projects worth more than P900 billion, 70 percent of which were already completed, he added.
Aside from these projects, DPWH will start the rehabilitation of the entire EDSA in compliance with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Bonoan highlighted several key infrastructure projects expected to be completed in 2025, including the bridge in Zamboanga Sibugay that will link the Zamboanga Peninsula to Olutanga Island, improving accessibility and driving economic growth in the region.
Another major project set for completion this year is the Central Luzon Expressway that will connect Tarlac to Cabanatuan in Nueva Ecija.
“This expressway, which spans about 30 to 40 kilometers along the corridor, will eliminate the need for a detour from Tarlac to Nueva Ecija. It’s set to be finished this year,” Bonoan said.
