WESM rates in LuzVis up

The initial average price of electricity in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) in Luzon and Visayas increased in October due to high demand,  according to the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP).

As of October 15, average price per kilowatt hour (kWh) in the WESM for Luzon was  P7.58,  55.6 percent higher than  September’s P4.87 per kWh.

IEMOP said  average demand in Luzon  went up  2.8 percent to 9,638 megawatts (MW) from 9,377 MW while average supply declined 8.7 percent to 12,150 MW from 13,307 MW.

Average power reserves rose 1.3 percent to 474 MW from 468 MW.

Average price per kWh in the WESM for Visayas was  P8.49, higher by 33.5 percent from September’s P6.36 per kWh.

IEMOP said  average demand in Visayas  went up 2.1 percent to 1,884 MW from 1,846 MW while average supply increased2.03 percent to 2,309 MW from 2,263 MW.

Average power reserves for the period surged by 17.4 percent to 243 MW from 207 MW.

Robinson Descanzo, IEMOP trading operations head and acting chief operating officer, said

as much as 1,700 MW  of supply from four power plants were not available from September 26 to October 15, thus contributing to high WESM rates.

In contrast, average WESM price in the Mindanao grid fell 13.1 percent to P4.96 from  September’s P5.71 per kWh.

Average demand in the island for the period rose 3.6 percent to 1,893 MW from 1,827 MW while average supply jumped by 9.2 percent to 3,133 MW from 2,869 MW. Average reserves went down by 8.8 percent to 93 MW from 102 MW.
