Vehicle sales in the first half of 2021 surged 56 percent from the same period in 2020.
Sales, however crawled month-on-month, up only 2 percent in June from May.
A joint report by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association showed total vehicle sales in January to June stood at 132,767 units from 85,041 units in the same period last year. June sales were at 22,500 units, up 45 percent from 15,578 units in the same month in 2020 but just 2 percent higher from 22,062 units in May.
“This is a respite amid the less buoyant consumer outlook for big-ticket items for the second quarter of this year according to a government survey,” said Rommel Gutierrez, Campi president, in a statement.
Gutierrez said “the industry is coping up with (and) adjusting to the effects of the pandemic while striving to strike a balance between its contribution to the economy and keeping its stakeholders safe and healthy during these unprecedented times.”
Sales of passenger cars in the first semester rose 77 percent to 42,408 units from 23,912 units a year ago. The segment now corners 32 percent of total industry sales.
Commercial vehicles continue to account for the bulk with 90,361 units sold, up 48 percent from 61,129 units last year.
