Vehicle sales sustained their upward momentum at the end of October, boosting optimism of surpassing last year’s performance.
A joint report by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association showed total sales rose 24 percent to 214,186 units from 173,035 units in the same period last year.
All segments posted increases.
In October alone, sales jumped 5 percent to 22,581 units from 21,493 units in September but a 10-percent drop from October 2020 sales of 25,023 units.
“Based on the October 2021 sales performance, the auto industry remains strong and will certainly surpass last year’s overall performance. Likewise, we continue to discuss relevant issues with the government aimed at ensuring full recovery of the industry as the country’s economic growth outlook is upgraded,” said Rommel Gutierrez, Campi president.
The industry sold 223,793 units in 2020.
Commercial vehicles continue to drive the growth of the industry with 145,578 units sold to date, up 21 percent from 119,968 units and about 69 percent of the market. Passenger car sales registered a faster growth of 29 percent with 68,608 units from 53,067 units.
Light commercial vehicles sold 111,938 units; Asian utility vehicles, 25,726 units; light trucks, 4,071 units, Category IV trucks and buses, 2,930 units and; Category V trucks and buses, 913 units.
Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. continued to lead with 103,475 units sold, equivalent to 48 percent market share and an increase of 38 percent from last year’s 74,848 units.
Rounding up the top three are Mitsubishi Motor Philippines with sales of 29,565 units and Ford Motor Co. Philippines Inc., 16,294 units. Irma Isip
