The United States has temporarily banned the entry of wild caught shrimps and their byproducts harvested from the Philippines, according to an advisory from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

The DTI advisory issued on February 12 said  the US government through Public Law 101-162 Section 609, has prohibited the importation of shrimp caught using commercial fishing technology that adversely affects turtles.

DTI said  shrimp exporter’s or importer’s declaration signed by the competent authority of the exporting country must accompany all imports of shrimp and products from shrimp into the US to certify that the shrimp for export was harvested in a manner not harmful to sea turtles or harvested by aquaculture.

The agency said Philippine exporters of shrimp paste or other shrimp products are currently advised not to ship to the US to avoid shipments being held by the US Customs and Border Protection until the issue is fully resolved.

DTI added  Philippine exporters of shrimp paste or other shrimp products to the US  affected by this law are advised to communicate directly with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources to secure needed certification.
