State-run National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has ordered telecommunication companies and internet service providers (ISP) to suspend all major network repairs and maintenance works to ensure uninterrupted services during the election.
NTC issued a memorandum circular last April 25 directing all telcos and ISPs to suspend all major network repairs and maintenance works from May 4 to 14, 2022.
“This will ensure non-interruption of telecommunication services and continued digital connectivity of election related communications during this time,” the NTC said.
Still, telcos and ISPs are allowed to conduct emergency repairs but must notify the NTC.
“The concerned entities shall immediately inform the NTC of the details of the emergency repair. Telcos and ISPs maintenance personnel (including subcontractors) are required to use proper company ID, uniform and shall use company marked vehicles at all times,” the NTC said.
The NTC will furnish the notices to the Commission on Elections, Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police to prevent unscrupulous persons from causing any interruption on telecom services.
The NTC also requested the Department of Public Works and Highways to suspend ongoing diggings that may cause fiber cuts from May 4 to 14.
This after the NTC received a letter from Globe Telecom Inc. regarding possible fiber cuts that may be caused by the diggings.
Meanwhile, PLDT Inc. and its mobile unit Smart Communications Inc. said they will abide by the NTC order but will facilitate emergency repairs to ensure uninterrupted service to customers.
“When it comes to repair and maintenance, the customer is always a priority. Anything that will hamper and will disrupt the elections is something that NTC would like to eliminate. We will abide with the NTC memorandum but in cases where there will be emergency repair, we will facilitate,” Mario Tamayo, PLDT and Smart head of technology, said during the company financial briefing.
PLDT said it will provide the best possible services and connection and ensure uninterrupted services during the election
