Nissan Philippines Inc. (NPI) said changes in regulation, specifically incentives on electric vehicles (EV) as well as on the establishment of more infrastructure to support their operations will expand the market for this type of vehicle.

NPI president Atsushi Najima made this statement following the commercial launch locally on Sunday of Nissan’s 100-percent EV model, the Leaf.

Najima said a reduction to 5 or 10 percent of the duty on EVs, which is now pegged at 30 percent, will cut drastically their prices and increase the adoption of this vehicle among Filipinos.

Najima added incentives or support to charging stations will give customers the confidence to drive an EV.

“If the regulation changes, the EV market will change completely, the market will change drastically,” Najima added.

The Leaf is priced at P2.798 million at retail and isn imported from the United Kingdom.

Bills are pending in Congress seeking tariff and excise elimination on EV parts and components.
