Taguig City, home to one of the country’s major business districts, may be the next agri-aqua industrial business corridor

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has partnered with the city for an urban agriculture project and a multi-agency agricultural government assistance program as the initial phase in transformng Taguig into an agri-aqua industrial business corridor.

DA Secretary William Dar cited Taguig’s potential due to the developments around the area, including plans to rehabilitate the Laguna Lake that can support aquaculture sustainably.

“Farmers and fisherfolk from Rizal and Laguna could come directly to Taguig using their boats to bring their produce and see to it that we have all the cold storages, the warehouses and of course the open markets for people to come in a big way,” Dar said.

The initial partnership between DA and Taguig City aims to enhance the city’s urban food security and nutrition as well as to provide an additional source of income through processing and improving efficiencies in the food value chain by addressing social integration of vulnerable communities, and contributing to urban ecological management.

The project will start construction next year. It will complement the planned Clark Fresh Market at the Clark Civil Aviation Complex which will have an integrated post-harvest facility to cater niche markets for organic produce, halal-certified and premium quality food products.

Dar said these facilities in strategic areas will help address employment challenges in the new normal scenario amid the pandemic.
