San Miguel Corp. (SMC) is set to sign the contract for P735-billion New Manila International Airport (NMIA) in Bulacan this week.
The contract signing will pave the way to start the project construction before the end of the year which slated to be completed in four to six years.
Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced the signing with SMC unit San Miguel Holdings Corp (SMHC) for Bulacan airport will be held on September 18 at DOTr office in Clark, Pampanga in the morning.
DOTr secretary Arthur Tugade and Ramon Ang SMC president and CEO are expected to lead the contract signing on Wednesday.
Last month, DOTr has awarded to SMC the NMIA project two weeks after the Swiss Challenge completed, where no other party challenged the original proponent for the construction of the airport.
Under the Notice of Award (NOA), SMHC will undertake the financing, design, construction, supply, completion, testing, commissioning, and operation and maintenance of the new international gateway.
SMC has engaged the services of global firms Groupe ADPi, Meinhardt Group and Jacobs to design and build NMIA.
All three companies were involved in building world-class airports including Singapore’s Chiangi Airport, Atlanta Airport and France’s Charles de Gaulle Airport, SMC said.
SMC is building a 2,500 hectare property in Bulakan, Bulacan about 30 kms northeast of Metro Manila at no cost to the government.
The Bulacan Airport will have a design capacity of 100 million passengers per year but can be expanded to 200 million. With four parallel runways planned, it targets 240 aircraft movements per hour.
The NMIA project involves the construction operation, and maintenance of an international airport located in Bulakan, Bulacan under a 50-year concession.
The project will also include the construction of an 8.4-kilometer tollway that will connect the airport to the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) in Marilao, Bulacan.
