San Miguel Corp.’s (SMC) proposed expansion of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport expressway (NAIAx) is expected to secure the National Economic and Development Authority’s (NEDA) approval within this quarter, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The proposal to extend NAIAx all the way to Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig was submitted in November 2017 and will hopefully get clearance from the NEDA- Investment Coordination Committee soon, said Mark Villar, DPWH secretary.
“The NAIA expressway expansion…they are moving forward so hopefully soon, I think within the first quarter, we can expect NEDA (approval),” Villar said.
He added they plan to further extend NAIAx up to Lawton and Imelda avenues in Pasay.
The NAIAx expansion is seen to ease traffic on Sales Bridge and lessen travel time from the Coastal road, airport terminals 1, 2 and 3 as well as SM Mall of Asia areas to BGC to just 10 minutes. The project will decongest Magallanes and the Edsa-Pasay area.
Also included are NAIAx ramps extension from the NAIA Terminal 1 and 2 areas all the way to SM Sucat, where it can link up with the Circumferential Road 5 (C5) extension.
This will benefit motorists heading to Sucat, Las Piñas and C5 who usually spend anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour just getting out of gridlock along airport roads.
SMC through unit Vertex Tollways Development Inc. holds the concession for NAIAx, a four-lane elevated expressway.
SMC also operates Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union expressway that runs from Tarlac City up to Rosario, La Union; Skyway; South Luzon expressway; and Southern Tagalog Arterial Road.
