Shares rise on upbeat sentiment

Share prices ended higher Wednesday on upbeat investor sentiment.

The peso closed up.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index  was up 42.70 points to 6,897.36, a 0.62 percent hike.

The broader All Shares index was up 18.40 points or 0.51 percent to 3,600.10.

Losers edged gainers 93 to 91 with 50 stocks unchanged. Trading turnover reached P4.88 billion.

The peso closed at 55.94 to the dollar, up from 56.035 on Tuesday. The currency opened at 55.99 and hit a high of 55.9 and a low of 56.10. Trading turnover reached $1.29 billion.

Claire Alviar, analyst at Philstocks Financial Inc., said the possible interest rate cut by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, coupled with their strong 2023 earnings result so far, are boosting investors’ sentiments.

Most actively traded Ayala Land Inc. was up P0.65 to P35.55. BDO Unibank Inc. was up P2 to P157. International Container Terminal Services Inc. was down P10 to P280. Bank of the Philippine Islands was up P2.20 to P120. SM Prime Holdings Inc. was up P0.90 to P33.80. Ayala Corp. was up P4.50 to P714.50. SM Investment Corp. was up P8 to P916.

Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co. was down P0.20 to P58.70. Jollibee Foods Corp. was up P2 to P261. Century Pacific Food Inc. was down P0.35 to P35.05.
