Safety issues on EV chargers,  LPG accessories addressed

The Bureau of Product Standards (BPS) said electric vehicle (EV)  charging equipment and stations EV charging stations as well as hoses and regulators of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will now  be covered by mandatory standards.

Neil Catajay, BPS director, said in a press conference on Wednesday the move is meant to address concerns over the safety of these products due to recent fire incidents.

According to Catajay, EV standalone charging facilities are covered by regulations imposed by the Department of Energy  but the equipment  and the station itself must meet standards under the supplemental guidelines for Department Administrative Order 22-10 that took effect last July 21.

“BPS will ensure the equipment to be installed in charging stations comply regulations on Philippine National Standards. All charging stations  need to pass through, and comply with, regulations before they are installed, Catajay said.

He said due to numerous reports of substandard LPG tanks that have caused fire incidents, LPG tanks have always been covered by mandatory certification.

The BPS said just as important are regulators and hoses used in LPG and now have to go through product testing.
