Malaya thermal power plant
A planned rehabilitation and replacement of the existing facilities of the Malaya thermal power plant in Pililla, Rizal is scheduled for public scoping this Thursday, according to documents filed at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).
Based on filings available in the EMB website, Belgrove Power Corp. eyes to rehabilitate the existing 350 megawatts (MW) unit 2 oil-fired power unit as well as construct a new 60 MW natural gas-fired power unit.
However, the existing 300 MW unit 1 oil-fired power unit is set for decommissioning.
The hearing is part of the environmental impact assessment process where the proponent can provide an overview of the proposed project and present proposed actions.
The public scoping will also gather issues and concerns and other relevant information needed ito be considered in crafting the terms of reference for the preparation of the project’s environmental impact statement.
A separate filing said the rehabilitation project will cost P3.8 billion. The gas turbine power plant will be finished within the year.
The entire project will be operational y April 2025.
The developer said the project cost will be spent on the detailed engineering studies and designs; acquisition of permits and licenses; site preparation and development; construction of power plant and support facilities; procurement of equipment and materials; environmental management and protection; air pollution devices; water treatment facilities; and environmental monitoring activities.
In 2021, Belgrove acquired the Malaya thermal power plant and its underlying land from the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. for P3.12 billion through a bidding.
