The Philippines’ total installed on-grid power capacity as of the first half of 2020 reached 25,109 megawatts (MW), an increment of 0.4 percent against full year 2019’s 25,006 MW, data from the Department of Energy showed..
The data showed coal still dominates the power mix but capacity was unchanged at 10,417 MW and its share slightly shrank to 41.5 percent from 41.7 percent.
Installed capacity from oil- based power plants followed with a total of 3,778 MW, a 0.29 percent increase from 3,767 MW. Its overall share in the power mix went down to 15 percent from 15.1 percent.
Closely trailing on third place is the installed capacity of hydroelectric power plants with 3,730 MW, a 0.2 percent increase from the previous year’s 3,729 MW. Its overall share remained at 14.9 percent.
Installed capacity from natural gas-fired power plants stayed at 3,453 MW, same with its overall share at 13.8 percent as the contribution of geothermal power plants remained at 1,928 MW or a share of 7.7 percent.
Solar power plants recorded the biggest additional capacity to 1,013 MW from 921 MW, an increase of almost 10 percent. Their share, however, remains miniscule at 4 percent from 3.7 percent.
Capacity contribution of biomass power plants were not changed at 363 MW but its share to the power mix slightly dropped to 1.4 percent from 1.5 percent as the total installed capacity of wind power plants remained stagnant at 427 MW and a share of 1.7 percent to the entire power mix.
