State-run Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) announced on Monday the completion of the Port of Marawi rehabilitation, nearly seven years after the 2017 siege.

The completion of the rehabilitation project is expected to improve transportation and trade in the region.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the inspection of the newly constructed port, a major government infrastructure project aimed at restoring connectivity and accelerating economic recovery in the city.

In a press statement issued June 23, PPA general manager Jay Santiago said the Port of Marawi is part of the agency’s program to enhance access and economic opportunities in underserved areas.

“We at the Philippine Ports Authority are honored to contribute to the rehabilitation of Marawi City through this project. We encourage the communities around Lake Lanao to maximize the use of this facility, which was made possible through the leadership of President Marcos,” Santiago said.

The new port, developed by the PPA under the Marawi Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Peacebuilding Program (MRRP) of the Office of the Presidential Adviser for Marawi Rehabilitation and Development, is seen as a crucial facility in strengthening transportation and trade in the region.

Along with the nearby Marawi Fish Port, the Port of Marawi, was built with a total allocation of P261.5 million. The facility features: an 8,000-square-meter backup area, a single-storey passenger terminal building, a one-storey fish port, berthing facilities for fast craft vessels, and Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ramp.

Before the project, local residents relied only on a basic causeway for their transportation and fishing needs. With the port now nearing full operation, it is expected to facilitate smoother movement of goods, passengers, and services across Marawi City and surrounding communities, especially via Lake Lanao, the second-largest lake in the Philippines.

President Marcos emphasized the importance of modern port infrastructure in Marawi and directed relevant agencies to study the development of additional ports around Lake Lanao to boost connectivity and regional integration.

The president was joined during the inspection by PPA’s Santiago and other officials. Also present were Presidential Adviser for Marawi Rehabilitation and Development Secretary Nasser Pangandaman Sr., Lanao Del Sur Provincial Governor Mamintal Alonto Adiong Jr. and other local officials.
