TWENTY-FOUR facilities of PLDT Inc. and its wireless subsidiary Smart Communications Inc. in the greater Metro Manila are shifting to 100 percent renewable energy (RE).
Through a partnership with ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES), PLDT and Smart expect to generate P6 million in annual savings on energy and operating costs and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by almost 21,000 tons for 2024.
The facilities switching to RE include PLDT-Smart IOC facility in Makati City, a 24/7 command center that oversees and manages the performance of PLDT and Smart’s fixed and wireless network operations nationwide, as well as facilities in Antipolo City, Cainta, Calamba City, Caloocan City, Las Piñas, Makati City, City of Manila, Marikina City, Muntinlupa City, Parañaque City, Pasig City, Quezon City, Taguig City and Valenzuela City.
“We continue to invest in more renewables to power up our facilities, particularly these key sites in Metro Manila. Recognizing the many benefits of RE, we are eyeing to switch more sites and further increase the share of renewables in our overall energy mix,” Leo Gonzales, PLDT sector head for property and facilities, said in a statement over the weekend.
Parallel to the switch of select Metro Manila facilities, PLDT and Smart have also been shifting key sites in Visayas and Mindanao to RE, sourcing from a mix of solar, geothermal and wind energy.
The PLDT Group said its continuing RE transition aligns with its decarbonization roadmap that aims to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 40 percent by 2030, coming from a 2019 baseline.
