PLDT Inc. is rolling out additional fiber lines and ports in the next three to six months to serve the rising demand for high-speed broadband internet as more people work and study from home due to the pandemic.

PLDT said it will deploy additional fiber lines and provide 500,000 more ports nationwide.

At PLDT Enterprise’s annual Philippine Digital Convention 2020 virtual briefing, Manuel Pangilinan, PLDT chairman and chief executive officer, said fiber to the home is the main and best platform to deliver fast internet service, although he also sees demand for fixed wireless services rising in the next one to two years using fifth generation technology.

According to Pangilinan, fixed wireless services will be quite important to tap the middle and low income families in the country which comprise 25 million households.

Alfredo Panlilio, PLDT chief revenue officer and Smart Communications Inc. president, said more installation and repair teams have been deployed to provide the most extensive fiber infrastructure in the country.

Meanwhile, PLDT Enterprise and Smart are in the advance stage of discussion with long-time partner Nokia to provide next generation Internet of Things (IoT) services to customers.

Smart and Nokia intend to build the “Smart IoT Platform,” the first of its kind for enterprises in the Philippines that aims to help businesses easily deploy IoT services and solutions to manage their connected devices for growth opportunities in the future.
