PH reiterates intention for free trade deal with US

LIMA, Peru. — TRADE Secretary Cristina Roque on Friday led a joint meeting with top executives from the US Chamber of Commerce, US-Asean Business Council, and AMCHAM Peru on the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders’ week.

Roque highlighted the Philippines’ interest in joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and resuming free trade agreement (FTA) talks with key trading partners.

She likewise expressed optimism about a Philippines-US FTA and sought support from the US delegation.

The discussions also highlighted the Philippines’ recent policy reforms to boost the country’s business environment, with a focus on foreign investments and enhancing the ease of doing business.

Roque also presented key legislative updates, including the recent signing of the CREATE More law and amendments to the Public Service Act, which she said are aimed at simplifying processes and offering attractive incentives for investors.

“We remain committed to reducing bureaucratic hurdles and creating a more conducive environment for your businesses,” the trade chief said.

Engagements with US business leaders also explored potential collaborations to provide SMEs with wider markets and assist them on their digital transformation. Other topics of discussions also included responsible mining, agribusiness and renewable energy.

Aligned with the “Bagong Pilipinas” agenda, Roque reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to fostering strategic economic partnerships that drive business growth, regional integration, and inclusive development.
