PH lags in car sales, output

The Philippines continues to lag in Asean automotive production and was the only country that registered a decline in the region as of July.

Data from the Asean Automotive Federation (AAF)  showed  vehicle production in the Philippines slipped 4 percent to 48,166 units in January to July from 50,046 units in the same period in 2021.

The Philippines ranked fifth in the six car-producing countries in Asean, ahead only of Myanmar which produced 2,048 units but which grew 189 percent from 1,055 units in 2021.

In terms of sales, the Philippines also ranked fifth among the seven countries covered by the Asean data, better only than Singapore and Myanmar which sold 25,418 units and 6,382 units, respectively.

Asean motor vehicle sales as of July  rose 27 percent to 1.9 million units from 1.51 million units last year with Indonesia (561287 units), Thailand (521,655) and Malaysia (380,595) leading the pack.

As of July, Asean production of four-wheel vehicles jumped 22 percent to 2.4 million from 1.96 million a year ago, the AAF data showed.

The region continues to be led by Thailand which produced a million units as of July, followed by Indonesia, 781,264 units and; Malaysia, 369,994 units. – Irma Isip
