PH internet users nearly 100M; surfing close to avg 9 hrs/day

Internet users who spend nearly 9 hours on average per day web surfing in the Philippines have reached close to 100 million this month, Meltwater, a global leader in social and media intelligence, said in its latest report.

Meltwater’s Digital 2025 Philippine Study released on Wednesday showed the number of web surfers in the country reached 97.5 million, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 0.8 percent. 

The increase translates to 792,000 additional users year-on-year.

Based on the latest census by the Philippine Statistics Authority, more than 109 million Filipinos were tallied in 2020.

In terms of usage, Filipinos spend 8 hours and 52 minutes on average per day on the internet – maintaining their rank significantly ahead of the global average of 6 hours and 38 minutes. 

The study said 98.9 percent of Filipino internet users also use chat and messenger apps at a higher rate than the global average of 94.5 percent. 

On the other hand, 94 percent of those who use email services each month were also higher than the global average of 75 percent.

The report said 50 percent of Filipino internet users use mobile video calling apps – more than the 35.5 percent global average. 

In terms of mobile banking, 91.3 percent of Filipino web users who use online financial services apps rank first in the world.

 They use banking, investment or insurance websites or apps every month, the Meltwater report said.

Meanwhile, nearly two-thirds or 61.5 percent of Southeast Asia’s population are on social media, which comprise 10 percent of the global share of social media identities.

“The region loves social media, with all nations using more platforms than the global average of 6.83 percent,” said Meltwater. 

On average, 8.36 percent of social media users were in the Philippines, followed by 8.12 percent in Malaysia, 7.93 percent in Indonesia, 7.24 percent in Singapore, and 7.11 percent in both Vietnam and Thailand.

The Philippines leads globally with an average of 3 hours and 32 minutes spent daily on social media, exceeding the global average by more than an hour, the report said.

The Philippines and Indonesia are the top two gaming markets In the region.

Thailand ranks third globally in the time spent playing video games at 1 hour and 32 minutes daily – nearly half an hour more than the global average.

Globally, the report said YouTube was the “most used” social media platform at the start of 2025, with a 16 percent active users base, followed by WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok as the top five. Social media platforms. 

“When it comes to the world’s ‘favorite’ social platform, Instagram tops the charts, with 16.6 percent of social media users pledging their allegiance. WhatsApp ranks second with 16 percent, while Facebook comes in third, with 13.1 percent,” the Meltwater report said.
