The Philippines’ average internet speeds for mobile and fixed broadband have improved in December 2020 but are still way below the global average speeds, according to Ookla, global leader in internet testing and analysis.
The average mobile download speed was higher at 22.5 megabits per second (Mbps) in December as compared to 18.49 Mbps in November 2020, with an upload speed of 6.03 Mbps and latency of 33 milliseconds (ms).
Latency is defined as the time it takes for data to get to its destination. A lower latency figure is favored.
In terms of fixed broadband, Ookla data showed the Philippine average rose to 31.44 Mbps in December from 28.68 Mbps in November.
However, the internet speeds are still below the global average speed for mobile in December which stood 47.20 Mbps for downloads, 12.67 Mbps for uploads and latency of 36 ms.
For fixed, the global average download speed stood at 96.43 Mbps, upload speed 52.31 Mbps and latency, 21ms.
The country ranked 96th on mobile and 100th in fixed broadband speeds out of 139 and 176 countries globally.
In terms of the mobile network’s service consistency, Ookla’s quarterly data showed Globe Telecom Inc.’s overall consistency score in the fourth quarter of 2020 improved to 60.82 percent from 56.83 percent in the third quarter.
Globe’s regional mobile consistency score also improved from the previous quarter in 16 out of 17 regions. The company registered increases as high as 10 percentage points, with consistency scores ranging from 39 percent and 65 percent in the fourth quarter of 2020.
Mobile Consistency Score measures the number of incidences (viewed as a percentage) of a provider’s samples equal or exceeds both a download threshold of 5 Mbps and an upload threshold of 1 Mbps.
