Mobile and fixed broadband internet speeds in the Philippines have significantly improved this year from the past four years, according to Ookla Speedtest Global index’s recent report.
Ookla said the country’s average download speed for fixed broadband improved by 216.94 percent to 25.07 Megabits per second (Mbps) in July 2020, from 7.91 Mbps in July 2016.
For mobile internet, the average download speed stood at 16.95 Mbps in July, more than double the 7.44 Mbps recorded in July 2016.
Government initiatives to reduce the permitting requirements and procedure for the construction of cell towers will allow faster rollout of telecommunication towers in the country.
With this, the Department Information and Communications Technology expects shared towers in the country to reach over 23,000 this year, from the current 20,000 towers.
The over 3,000 additional towers will be built by independent tower companies and the third telecom player DITO Telecommunity.
In response to the government’s call for telcos to improve their networks this year, PLDT’s minimum internetspeed will improve from 22 Mbps to 30 Mbps by yearend.
