The Philippines has put in place a policy that would support Asean’s sustainability initiatives, according to Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual.

Pascual, who joined the 22nd Asean Economic Community Council (AEC) Meeting in preparation for the 42nd Asean Summit on May 7 in Jakarta, said the recently-enacted Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) reflects the country’s commitment toward a greener mobility and fossil fuel-free environment in the region.

At the AEC, Pascual said ministers finalized and endorsed for adoption of Asean Leaders the Declaration on Developing Regional Electric Vehicle Ecosystem.

He said the Philippines supported the declaration and urged relevant Asean sectoral bodies to ensure that the work in crafting a regional policy framework will put Asean in a stronger position to further attract high-tech investment further and create high-value jobs, especially with the ongoing global shift to EV.

As part of the EVIDA, the Philippines is currently working on the EV Incentive Strategy to fully implement the  law.

The AEC Council deliberated on the need to further strengthen Asean’s sustainability initiatives, particularly in pursuing transition to clean energy and the development of a regional electric vehicle ecosystem.  – Irma Isip
