THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is conducting the detailed engineering design for the construction of a P12.9-billion road project in Mindanao.

Emil Sadain, DPWH undersecretary for unified project management office, said in a statement the project is the Marawi transcentral roads phase 3 (stage 3) with total length of 23.9 kilometers together with the 19.9 kms. Marawi City ring road.

This will be funded by a loan agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the road network development project in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao (RNDP-CAAM).

RNDP-CAAM also includes the construction of new roads to link inaccessible communities of Maguindanao province that will contribute to the consolidation of peace in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, particularly the 35-km. Parang-Balabagan Road, 7-km. Parang East Diversion Road and 16.8-km. Manuangan-Parang Road.

In addition, DPWH is optimistic the ongoing rehabilitation of the 18.97-km. Marawi transcentral road in Lanao Del Sur under stage 1 will be completed by December 2020, despite nearly two months of suspended construction activities due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Funded under the P970-million grant from the government of Japan thru JICA, the ongoing Marawi transcentral road project which is clustered into three contract packages has made remarkable progress since work resumed towards achieving the completion goal, DPWH said.

Sadain said DPWH immediately coordinated with the contractors upon lifting of the local community lockdown in Marawi City to resume work, subject to compliance with the issued construction safety guidelines for the implementation of infrastructure projects during the “new normal,” so that the road project can be completed soonest.
