The west zone water concessionaire is allocating P10 billion to build its third water treatment plant that will tap Laguna Lake as source in a bid to ensure long-term supply reliability.
Maynilad Water Services Inc. will build the treatment plant in Poblacion, Muntinlupa which is expected to produce 150 million liters per day (MLD) of potable water upon its completion in the last quarter of 2022.
The facility will be able to provide water for some 150,000 households and will bring Maynilad’s total yield from Laguna Lake to 450 MLD.
Once the Poblacion facility is completed, the water concessionaire will have a total of five water treatment plants with a combined production capacity of about 2,850 MLD for its over 9.7 million customers in the west zone.
“We are doing everything we can to meet our service obligations to our customers. So although we have to recast our five-year investment program, we still have to pursue projects essential for meeting the water supply requirements of a growing population,” Ramoncito Fernandez, Maynilad president and chief executive officer, said in a statement.
Fernandez said the move is also driven by the fact that relying on Angat Dam’s supply alone for the water needs of Metro Manila will be unsustainable.
“It is a huge risk to rely on just Angat Dam as major source of raw water for Metro Manila, so we are working closely with the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System so that the development of another source can be facilitated,” he explained.
Maynilad began tapping Laguna Lake in 2010 as an alternative raw water source so it can reduce dependence on Angat Dam. The company currently has two treatment facilities in the area that have a combined output of 300 MLD.
Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It covers Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario that are all in Cavite.
