Over 1.1M workers displaced in 5 months

More than 1 million workers nationwide were displaced in just the first five months of 2021, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Based on the latest Job Displacement Monitoring Report, the DOLE said a total of 1,148,996 workers have been displaced from January 1 to May 30, 2021.

A total of 191,117 workers were displaced nationwide from 6,602 establishments due to reduced workforce and permanent closure from January 2021 to present.

Another 957,879 workers from 21,810 establishments have been placed flexible work arrangements or were affected by temporary closure.

Of this total, 173,059 workers from 5,714 establishments lost their jobs due to retrenchment or reduction of workers.

Permanent closure of 888 firms have resulted to the displacement of 18,058 workers.
The report also showed that 342,048 workers from 10,583 establishments lost their jobs due to temporary closures.

Finally, there were 615,831 workers from 11,227 companies were placed under flexible work arrangements.

The National Capital Region (NCR) recorded the highest number of displaced workers with 114,178 workers; followed by Central Visayas with 20,632 workers; Central Luzon with 18,345 workers; and Calabarzon with 12,819 workers.

In terms of establishment sizes involved in worker displacement, large enterprises accounted for the biggest chunk of firms that implemented flexible work arrangements (affecting 333,188 workers) and retrenchment (117,499); while small businesses mostly opted for temporary (144,759) and permanent closures (8,659).

By industry, construction industry had the highest number of affected workers with 51,403; followed by other service activities with 30,685; and transportation and storage with 22,139.
