The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has acquired eight units of heavy equipment through a P71.8 million loan granted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

NIA said the equipment will be used for the construction, operations, maintenance and rehabilitation activities of irrigation projects nationwide especially those that are frequently hit by typhoons.

The acquisition is part of the three-year re-fleeting program of NIA from 2017 to 2019.

The past two years, a total of 125 light/transport vehicles were procured while 35 units of heavy equipment were secured. For this year, the agency is set to get five units of heavy equipment and 91 units of light/transport vehicles.

Earlier this month, NIA also implemented two key circulars that will make problematic project contractors more accountable.
