Natural vs. lab-grown diamonds

The diamond industry faces resistance to lab-grown diamonds from some traditional retailers.

Lab-grown diamonds, also called synthetic by the GIA, are chemically identical to mined ones but are created in labs. The GIA certification often accompanies real diamond jewelry.

Though eco-friendly, lab-grown diamonds struggle with perceived value compared to natural ones. Some consumers still prefer natural diamonds for their rarity and formation process, affecting lab-grown diamonds’ resale prices.

Consumer confusion about lab-grown diamonds is a concern for pawnbrokers, fearing disputes over authenticity and value.

The Chamber of Pawnbrokers of the Philippines Inc. (CPPI) favors natural diamonds for their enduring appeal.

Natural diamonds, formed over millions of years, are rare geological wonders symbolizing luxury. CPPI notes their historical value retention.

CPPI president Jean Henri Lhuillier stated, “We at CPPI recognize that lab-grown diamonds provide an alternative option. But we also want the general public to know that many of our member pawnbrokers here in the Philippines do not accept lab diamonds- as opposed to natural diamonds. Natural diamonds offer a combination of rarity, beauty, cultural significance and emotional appeal and remain a cherished choice for many seeking unparalleled elegance and sophistication. That is why we advise those looking for valuable investments to go for natural diamonds when making a purchase as their value endures over the course of time.”
