Iloilo-based power distribution utility, MORE Electric and Power Corp. (MORE Power) said the power interruption experienced in its franchise area last month was caused by the maintenance works required to upgrade the entire system.
The company said the power disruption was necessary to stabilize services in the long term.
Roel Castro, MORE president, said the company needed to implement maintenance works on substations, transformers, and distributions in the past three months, causing brownouts around the city, adding that five substations in the city are integral part of the power distribution system as they reduce voltage to a level suitable for local distribution.
Substations protect consumers from sudden drops or surges of electricity as their inspections of the facilities revealed alarming conditions of the distribution system.
Castro said analysis of the substations indicated high levels of dissolved gas due to degradation of oil and paper insulation and that four of the five substations are over 90 percent loaded against the normal load of 70 to 80 percent.
