Maharlika Investment Corp. (MIC) is looking into a potential project in Palawan that would address the power supply needs of the province, President Marcos Jr. said yesterday.
The President, during his visit to Puerto Princesa yesterday for the distribution of Presidential Assistance to Farmers, Fisherfolk and Families in the Mimaropa region, said the MIC is working closely with the National Electrification Administration (NEA) and Palawan Electric Cooperative (Paleco) on the assessment of the situation and potential project.
Palawan is facing several power concerns including deteriorating distribution that has resulted in brownouts in the past and rising power rates.
Last month, the MIC, NEA and Paleco signed a memorandum of agreement to undertake a study, which aims to evaluate the current electrical system in Palawan, identify potential improvements and how to address them.
MIC shall also have the option to finance the possible upgrade of the power supply in the province.
Meanwhile, the President said the government is undertaking several key infrastructure projects across Mimaropa to boost the region’s economy, including tourism.
Marcos said the projects include:
the Ibato-Iraan Small Reservoir Irrigation Project in Aborlan in Palawan which is 95.15 percent complete; the widening of Dr. Damian Reyes Road in Marinduque which is 45.45 percent complete and; the Balabac Military Runway in Palawan which is 89.30 percent complete.
He said negotiations for the improvement of facilities and service at the Puerto Princesa Airport is ongoing, in addition to the procurement of land for the runway extension of the Pag-asa Island Airport Development Project.
Once completed, these projects are expected to provide an efficient mode of travel as well as help open the region to new investments and strengthen the tourism sector.
