MAYNILAD Water Services Inc. has partnered with the University of the Philippines (UP) to enhance research on emerging pollutants in Metro Manila’s water sources and wastewater systems.
In a statement over the weekend, Maynilad said the partnership will ensure long-term safety and quality of its water services.
UP will conduct comprehensive testing to assess the presence of unregulated pollutants that have been identified as emerging concerns in other countries.
Maynilad said even if its water supply consistently meets the stringent Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water, it recognizes the importance of staying ahead of potential future risks.
“Maynilad strictly complies with national water quality standards, providing safe and reliable water
to our customers… This partnership allows us to anticipate future challenges by exploring advanced technologies and ensuring that our treatment systems remain robust and adaptive,” said Roel Espiritu, Maynilad chief sustainability officer.
The company added that the research will support the development of advanced treatment methods such as ultraviolet photolysis and advanced oxidation to address potential emerging contaminants.
Maynilad said such innovations are tied to other key initiatives such as direct potable reuse, which aims to further enhance water sustainability while maintaining the highest safety standards.
