Maynilad acquires 19 sanitation trucks
West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has spent more than 179 million pesos to acquire 19 new vacuum truck units (VTUs) that will help boost its septage collection.
The 19 newly acquired 10-cubic meter capacity VTUs can clean around 190 septic tanks per day, and will reinforce Maynilad’s delivery of sanitation services for customers who are not yet connected to the sewer network.
In 2019, Maynilad was able to clean more than 147,900 septic tanks and treat nearly 233 million liters of septage. The septage that it collects is brought to the water company’s Septage Treatment Facilities for processing and treatment. Its by-product is then transported to a processing plant so it can be converted to organic fertilizer.
Maynilad’s wastewater infrastructure network currently includes 19 Sewage Treatment Plants, two joint sewage and septage treatment plants, and one septage treatment plant, with a combined treatment capacity of an estimated 664,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day.

Smartmatic tech enables LA County Fil-Ams to vote in Filipino
For the 2020 United States Presidential election, Los Angeles County deployed its voter-centered Voting Solutions for All People (VSAP). Using touchscreen ballot marking devices (BMD) built by Smartmatic, Filipino-American voters were able to select their native language in order to choose their leaders.
More than half of LA County’s population speaks a language other than English at home. To make the voting process as inclusive as possible, voting instructions and ballots were made available in 13 languages on the BMD’s touchscreen, as well as in audio instructions provided for those with disabilities.
This was the first deployment in a presidential election of the VSAP system. With this voter-centered solution, the county replaced its previous system with an entirely new model, overhauling nearly every aspect of the elections, including processes, locations, voting days, and registration procedures.
Smartmatic was hired by the county to manufacture 31,100 ballot marking devices, develop the backend software to manage the devices, and provide systems integration services.
