Former Taliptip residents start moving into new, safer homes

Former settlers of Barangay Taliptip in Bulakan, Bulacan have started moving into their new homes following the lump-sum cash assistance from San Miguel Corp.

This allowed them to voluntarily relocate to safer areas paving the way for the construction of the P734-billion Manila International Airport project.

SMC president and chief operating officer Ramon S. Ang said the company has been constantly in touch with former settlers in the coastal area where the airport will be built, to monitor their progress.

Ang said many Taliptip residents preferred to receive financial assistance which has enabled them to voluntarily transfer to places of their choice, with some choosing to go back to their home provinces.

Most of the former Taliptip residents worked as caretakers or workers at privately-owned fishponds that have gone out of business. They used to live in shanties or houses built on stilts in the coastal area.

Ang said  those who were even more prudent about their cash assistance have started their own small businesses, paid off debts, and set aside money for the education of their children.

A total of 277 owners of concrete and shanty houses in Barangay Taliptip qualified for financial assistance. SMC provided owners of non-concrete houses or shanties P250,000 each, while owners of concrete houses were given the appraised value of their homes, multiplied by two, plus P100,000.

SMC also provided cash assistance to 92 others who were disqualified, for a total of 369 beneficiaries.

The Company also distributed the total appraised cash value of the abandoned chapels in Sitio Pariyahan, Sitio Dapdap, Sitio Bunutan, and Sitio Capol to the residents of these sitios. From this, a total of P2,253,000 was given to the 242 residents.

Those who have opted to stay in Bulacan may learn skills they can use to get jobs at the airport, or to start their own small business.

Blended learning the STI way

Even before the shift to digital learning, STI Education for more than five years has implemented the use of an eLearning Management System (eLMS) to facilitate classes where students can experience studying with a blended learning approach.

Aisa  Hipolito, vice president for Academics of STI Education, said that STI’s ONline and ONsite Education or the ONE STI Learning Model is the company’s  solution on how to bring back classes and how to make education more engaging, accessible, and most importantly safe. This mode employs the main use of  eLMS, combined with face-to-face online instruction, to foster a dynamic learning experience that will achieve the desired learning outcomes.

On the eLMS, teachers can hold classes and upload modules, video lectures, educational motion graphics, and other learning materials that students can access, stream or download safely from home. Assessments in addition to online quizzes and timed tests, are done through the use of polls, online surveys or by video submission and chat.

STI Education has made sure that all students are equipped with the necessary tools to learn productively and efficiently by partnering with PLDT Enterprise to provide them a free SMART GIGA Study Plan, a SIM card with a 35GB monthly data plan.

CAM, Globe partner for safe learning

Through Globe, CAM secured Brightspace Learning Management System (LMS) licenses and incorporated it into the CAM Virtual Classroom. The program is aligned with the Department of Education’s prescribed most essential learning competency (MELC) for online distance learning (ODL). The system will help teachers in facilitating classes and tracking the progress of students’ learning.

School officials said the CAM curriculum paired with Brightspace guarantees that students will be given an individualized and superior learning experience. The system features assistive technologies, gamification, video-based assessment, and video conferencing which is in line with the instructional delivery of classes through synchronous and asynchronous learning. The institution offers educational courses for these levels: Toddler class and Kindergarten, Elementary, Junior High School, and Senior High School. CAM also offers a Special Education Program for children with special needs and accepts international students.

Globe myBusiness is helping institutions integrate technology through mySchoolSURF, a lineup of internet promos designed to help students and instructors. mySchoolSURF plans start at P199, which comes with 34GB of data allocation valid for seven days, when paired with a Globe at Home Prepaid WiFi device.

All plans come with 4GB daily data allocations for pre-defined apps useful for learning. These include video conferencing tools like Zoom, and research and productivity platforms such as Office 365, Canva, Blackboard, and Course Hero. Plans also come with access to instant messaging apps like Viber, Whatsapp, and Facebook Messenger. Institutions can allot data for other platforms for exams, special projects, or other learning needs.

SNAP welcomes new batch of BRIGHTS scholar

Renewable energy company SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP) has reaffirmed its commitment to support education in its host communities as it welcomed 12 incoming college freshmen students to their scholarship program.

The students hail from SNAP’s direct host municipalities of Bokod and Itogon in Benguet; Alfonso Lista, Ifugao; and Ramon, Isabela where their hydro power generation facilities are located. The scholars will each receive funding for their tuition fees, school fees, and living allowances.

“These scholarships are especially significant because COVID-19 has made it even more difficult for students to pursue their educational goals. We believe that education is a key component to powering positive change, so we continue to partner with parents and educators in helping our scholars realize their dreams,” said Joseph  Yu, SNAP president and chief executive officer.

SNAP held a virtual screening in July for 78 applicants, the most since they launched the Bridging Gaps in Higher Education through Tertiary Scholarships (BRIGHTS) program in 2017.

SNAP conducted a combination of virtual and face-to-face orientations for the new scholars and their parents and guardians, culminating in the signing of memorandums of agreement in August. All face-to-face activities were conducted according to COVID-19 safety measures.

BRIGHTS is a scholarship initiative under SNAP’s corporate social responsibility program. It targets deserving students with limited means from the company’s immediate host communities. The program has produced eight graduates while the new batch brings the number of active scholars to 48.  Its current university partners are Benguet State University, Cordillera Career Development College, University of Baguio, and the University of the Cordilleras in Baguio City; Ifugao State University in Lamut; Isabela State University in Echague; and PLT College, Inc. in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya.
