Smart Project Hotline to boost COVID communications

Local government units (LGUs) and their constituents now have an additional communications channel in the fight against COVID-19 through Project Hotline, a dedicated wireless solution offered by Smart Communications Inc. (Smart).

Designed for use nationwide, the Project Hotline platform includes a free smartphone, a Smart Prepaid or TNT SIM, and free data load allocation good for six months. Smart is also helping out local governments spread the information about their local hotline by bundling tarpaulin banners that can be strategically placed in public places. With these inclusions, the platform will benefit community residents, local government officials and employees, and frontline responders.

“Project Hotline is part of our efforts to ensure that LGUs are equipped with reliable connectivity during these trying times,” said Jane Basas, senior vice president and head of Consumer Wireless Business at Smart. “By providing our partners with a platform to send and receive community messages, Smart helps LGUs to better address the public health needs of their communities during this pandemic,” she added.

The new communications solution complements other community innovations rolled out by Smart, including Smart Infocast Service– a web-based text broadcast solution; the Smart Emergency Cell Broadcast System (ECBS)– a platform that can quickly send public warnings to mobile phone users in specific areas; and the Batingaw emergency app — a mobile application that provides government agencies, organizations, and individuals, immediate access to disaster warnings, advisories, location data, and disaster mappings.

All these innovations underscore Smart’s #SafePH advocacy promoting the use of technology to strengthen communications and help mitigate disaster risk in communities.

Delta extends middle seat blocks into January 2021

Delta is extending one of its key health and safety protocols this holiday season by blocking the selection of middle seats and limiting the number of customers per flight through at least Jan. 6, 2021.

Through Jan. 6, 2021, Delta will block the selection of middle seats in Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin via the Fly Delta app or online.

For customers in parties of one to two: Middle seats will be blocked for safety. For customers in parties of three or more: Middle seats will appear as available for booking, to allow families and travel companions to select seats together.

This functionality helps maintain Delta’s pledge to give customers more space on board while offering flexibility with their seat choices.

To ensure flights are not filled to capacity, customers can expect that Delta will limit the number of customers on board all aircraft — with or without middle seats; limit the First Class cabin to half capacity to further ensure more space between customers and; block one aisle of seats on aircraft without middle seats.

On routes where the planes begin to fill, Delta will continue to look for opportunities to upsize to a larger aircraft type or add more flights.

The Delta One cabin on widebody aircraft, which is designed with more space and privacy built in, will be offered at full capacity effective October 1.

TeaM Energy pushes education initiatives amid pandemic

TeaM Energy Foundation (TEFI) is  helping public schools in its host communities prepare for the start of the new school year this next month amid the challenges posed by the COVID pandemic.

In coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd) and different local government units in Quezon and Pangasinan, TEFI has donated learning and hygiene materials that will help teachers and students adjust to the new normal once classes begin, in support of the DepEd’s Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan.

“We realize the importance of sustaining the learning process for students in a safe and effective manner, while addressing the challenges brought about by this global pandemic,” said Greggy Romualdez, head of external affairs of TeaM Energy.

TEFI donated 650 reams of bond paper and more than 200 ink cartridges to DepEd Quezon Division to be used to print learning modules for the teachers and students in Quezon. TEFI also partnered with DepEd Quezon to facilitate the airing of learning programs over Quezon local radio.

TEFI participated in this year’s Brigada Eskwela by donating learning tools and more than 300 boxes of surgical masks, 240 gallons of isopropyl alcohol and 60 gallons of bleaching solution were provided to various schools in both provinces through the program.

TEFI has built 20 fully-furnished classrooms in Quezon and Pangasinan since 2014, in partnership with the DepEd and various local government units.

TEFI is the social development arm of TeaM Energy, which operates two coal-fired power plants: the 735 MW Pagbilao Power Station in Quezon Province and the 1,200 MW Sual Power Station in Pangasinan. It also has a 50 percent stake in the 420 MW Pagbilao Unit 3 Power Project in Quezon, and a 20 percent stake in the Ilijan natural gas project in Batangas.

Ecobags from Alfamart

Alfamart, the first and only Super Minimart chain in the Philippines, is currently giving away ecobags to customers.

Most cities and municipalities have imposed ordinances that reduce, or even completely ban, single-use plastics. Thus, ecobags have emerged as a necessary item to bring when shopping around.

However, most people that go to 24-hour establishments may not always have an ecobag handy, and not everyone is willing to spend extra for a new one. So, instead of offering them for sale, Alfamart stores are now giving them away with a minimum purchase of PhP500 worth of participating brands.

Apart from the practical convenience, giving better access to ecobags fits in with Alfamart’s community development advocacy.

“It’s our small way of getting the communities we serve used to ecobags and reducing their dependency on single-use plastics,” said Alfamart Philippines COO Harvey Ong.

For more information on the participating brands and other Alfamart promotions, you may visit https://alfamart.com.ph/shop-with-us/ or their FB page, Alfamart PH.
