MORE Power’s 1st major investment in Iloilo City comes to life

Striving towards improving the efficiency of Iloilo City’s power sector, MORE Power has embarked on its first major investment critical to the modernization of its distribution system.

This was stressed by Enrique K. Razon, Jr., chairman and president of Prime Strategic Holdings, Inc., major shareholder of MORE Power, following the energization of the 10MVA mobile substation at Iloilo Business Park at Megaworld in Mandurriao District here. The substation is expected to perform at a safe 70% capacity.

“The mobile substation will increase the capacity of the Megaworld area–one of Iloilo’s fastest-growing areas–by 6-8 megawatts… (and) will decongest the Mandurriao substation,” Razon said, adding that the powering on of the mobile substation is the utility’s first major step towards doubling Iloilo City’s power capacity within the next five years.

Razon disclosed that MORE Power will allocate around P2 Billion as emergency capital budget to further upgrade the distribution system here. Within the next five years, this capacity expansion will include a 30MVA mobile substation, another 50 MVA substation in Iloilo Business Park, and the substations in the city proper and in Jaro.

Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi, during the inauguration recently stressed that the mobile substation is a significant addition in the rehabilitation and upgrading of Iloilo City’s distribution system.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, meanwhile, said the 10MVA substation will not only provide the Megaworld with a larger capacity to service its power needs, but also ‘breathing space’ for two substations: the Mandurriao substation and to some extent, the Molo substation.

For his part, Roland Tiongson, first vice president of Megaworld Premier Offices, hailed MORE Power’s installation of the mobile station at the Megaworld area.

BPI, clients give back to fisherfolk

The Bank of the Philippines Islands (BPI), together with its social development arm BPI Foundation, is foregoing its traditional Christmas gifts for clients to extend help to local fisherfolks affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

BPI Foundation recently created the Sulong Pinoy program in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF-Philippines) that aims to elevate the lives of marginalized and underserved Filipinos. For the pilot run, beneficiaries will be select fisherfolk communities from Bicol and Occidental Mindoro who rely on catching tuna for income and food but have been negatively impacted by quarantine protocols and the recent typhoons Rolly and Ulysses.

The “Sulong Pinoy” program aims to provide technological and logistical equipment, and establish foodsheds, which are expected to benefit at least 7,800 low-income tuna fishermen from Lagonoy Gulf and Mindoro Strait. Additionally, there will be capacity-building sessions on foodshed management and financial literacy sessions to help beneficiaries cope with their difficulties.

Delta launches industry’s contact tracing for travelers

Delta is partnering with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to keep international customers informed of potential COVID-19 exposure through contact tracing.

Beginning Dec. 15, Delta will become the first US airline to ask customers traveling to the US from an international location to voluntarily provide five pieces of data to aid contact tracing and public health follow-up efforts, including: full name, email address, address in the US, primary phone and a secondary phone.

Customers and those in their itinerary can voluntarily participate in the contact-tracing program if they are flying on any Delta-operated flight or  if they are a foreign national and/or a US passport holder traveling to the US as final destination.

Currently, in the event of a confirmed COVID-19 case travelling while infectious, the CDC requests a passenger manifest from Delta to identify all customers seated two seats around the confirmed case. This information is then transmitted to the appropriate local health departments for follow-up, with each department taking responsibility for passengers in their own jurisdiction.

Delta will resume service between Manila and the US on Jan. 2, 2021.
