The Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP) recorded the highest peak demand for energy in Luzon and Visayas grids for the year last Tuesday.
IEMOP said demand in the Luzon grid hit at 11,513 megawatts (MW) on March 22 at 2:14 p.m.
IEMOP attributed this to the continuous resumption of business operations along with the expected recovery of the economy but noted this is still lower from the Department of Energy’s (DOE) projected 12,387 MW annual peak demand in Luzon this summer.
IEMOP warned the 11,513 MW approximate the 11,601 MW actual peak demand in Luzon last year.
Prior to the 11,513 recorded on Tuesday, the 11,392 MW peak demand last March 17 at 2:29 p.m. was the highest power demand in Luzon this year.
For Visayas, IEMOP said the peak this year was also recorded last Tuesday at 2,124 MW, still far from the DOE’s projected 2,528 MW peak demand in the region this year.
IEMOP said despite the increasing trend, supply remains to be sufficient to meet the demand system requirements as during the observed highest peak demand, there was around 12,136 MW supply in Luzon and 2,396 MW in Visayas.
IEMOP added as of Wednesday, average supply in both grids were still sufficient at 11,719 MW for Luzon and 2,244 MW for Visayas.
