The Light Rail Transit line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite extension project is more than halfway to completion on the first five stations from Baclaran to Sucat, Paranaque which are targeted to start operation this year.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said the project’s overall progress rate stood at 51.61 percent as of end 2020, a significant improvement from 36.8 percent last March despite the community quarantines imposed due to the pandemic.
The recent construction activities of the project include bored piling, pier/portal column works, and the MIA station foundation works, altogether with the launching of PI girder which is the chief horizontal support in the structure made for turnback slots.
The accelerated pace of construction also includes the expansion of existing depot in Baclaran, and the building of a new satellite depot at Zapote, according to the DOTr.
The Cavite extension will be linked to the existing line south of Baclaran station, to eight new stations that will run all the way to Niog in Bacoor, Cavite
The first five stations targeted to start partial operation this year include Redemptorist, MIA, Asiaworld, Ninoy Aquino, and Dr. Santos while the rest of the line to Niog, Bacoor will be operational in 2022.
The new line will have a design speed of 80 kilometer per hour (km/h) for the main line track; 60 km/h through stations; and 30 km/h for the secondary and depot tracks. The commercial speed of the Cavite extension will be 60km/h.
It is also projected to increase the line’s capacity to accommodate and serve 500,000 to 800,000 passengers daily.
