Intellectual property (IP) filings in 2023 rose 2.5 percent year-on-year due to increased awareness of IP and more innovations.
The IP Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) said in a statement it received 49,832 applications of trademarks, patents, utility models (UM) and industrial designs (ID) last year from 48,600 in 2022.
Trademark applications edged up by 1.2 percent to 41,953 from 41,452 and led by pharmaceuticals, health and cosmetics with 12,623 filings followed by agricultural products and services, with 11,510; scientific research, information and communication technology,9,139 ; management, communications, real estate and financial services, 7,474 and; textiles in clothing and accessories, 6,794 (10.3 percent).
Applications for a patent grant expanded by 2.9 percent to 4,544 from 4,418 also led by pharmaceuticals, with 2,600 applications, followed by organic fine chemistry, 1,046; biotechnology, 803; digital communication, 786 ; and basic materials chemistry, 763.
UM registered the highest annual growth rate at 24 percent, to 1,847 applications from 1,489 in 2022. Bulk was on food chemistry which saw 659 applications followed by basic materials chemistry, 78 applications; organic fine chemistry, 64; pharmaceuticals, 46 ; and other special machines, with 41.
ID applications went up by 19.9 percent to 1,488 from 1,241 with top ID applications intended for means of transport or hoisting, with 152 applications ; packages and containers for the transport or handling of goods, 118; recording, communication or information retrieval equipment, 84 ; furnishing, 83 ; and articles of clothing and haberdashery, with 72 (6.6 percent).
Copyright deposits soared to 76 percent to 6,522 from 3,706, a historic high.
The top type of copyrighted works registered at IPOPHL for recordal were books, pamphlets, articles, e-books, audio books, comics, novels, and other writings, with 3,432.
This was followed by audiovisual works and cinematographic works, totaling 1,181 ; computer programs, software, games, applications, 573; musical compositions, 398; drawings, paintings, architectural works, sculpture, engraving, prints, lithography or other works of art, models or designs for works of art, 318.
