International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) said its operation under Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT) in Rijeka, Croatia has hit more than 300,000 twenty-equivalent units (TEU) of cargo handled, a significant milestone.
The terminal also set a new record for its annual terminal volume, making the feat notable in the backdrop of a slowed global economic activity.
“Following a 20 percent growth in 2019, AGCT grew a further 12 percent in 2020 year to date, driven by a 30 percent increase in rail volumes,” ICTSI said.
“With the successful development of the new intermodal yard including the commissioning of two RMGs (rail mounted gantry) and new shunting tunnel, the terminal has significantly increased rail capacity,” it added.
Emmanuel Papagiannakis, AGCT chief executive officer, said the terminal capitalized on its new rail service to Central Europe and Easter Europe for the increased shipment that led to high volumes.
“With 70 percent of volume now coming from outside the Croatian market and from East and Central Europe, AGCT will continue developing the port and intermodal offering,” said Papagiannakis.
Papagiannakis said the 300,000th TE U was an export container, which arrived by train on a regular rail service from Central Europe, and was seamlessly loaded to a vessel deployed on one of the direct ocean services connecting North Adriatic to the Far East.
The terminal has a total yard capacity of 600,000 TE Us per year and is configured to optimize road and rail connectivity.
For trucks, the terminal offers a direct connection to the highway and a competitive average truck dwell time of just 13 minutes in the export cycle and 19 minutes in the import cycle.
