TO address food security issues related to price manipulation, a task force is being institutionalized in collaboration with the Philippine Competition Commission, according to Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual

Pascual said The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is closely monitoring the prices and availability of refined sugar in select supermarkets.

Pascual said he has instructed monitoring teams to regularly conduct price monitoring of sugar in selected supermarkets. He said the agencies continues to work with other government agencies, especially the Department of Agriculture (DA), to temper the impacts of inflation toward Filipino consumers and enable them to have access to affordable basic and prime commodities.

Amid reports on price increases in sugar last year, the government requested the assistance of various supermarkets to bring down their prices as part of their customer assistance to the buying public.

DTI still assists the DA in monitoring the price and supply of low-cost white/washed sugar in participating supermarkets and ensuring compliance with the purchase limit of one kilo of sugar per customer. Irma Isip
