Government agencies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with We Effect, a development cooperation organization, for the provision of a million units of climate-adaptive, environment-friendly and gender-sensitive type of housing in the Philippines by 2030.
The “1 Million Housing Project” aims to help reduce the 6.7-million housing need in the Philippines, targeting informal settler families living in danger zones.
The project will also promote the right to city where people can have access to schools, markets, basic services, and other facilities.
Funding will be mobilized from existing housing financial institutions such as the Social Housing Finance Corp., the National Home Mortgage Financial Corp. which are among the signatories to the MOU. Other signatories are the private sector represented by the Organization of the Social and Economic Housing Developers in the Philippines (OSHDP)and the local government of Quezon City.
OSHDP and the Center for Housing and Independent Research Synergies will provide services for the housing construction and conduct any studies needed for the project.
We Effect, a Swedish cooperative development organization, facilitates the “People, Private and Public Partnership”objective to provide safe, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable socialized housing for one million families nationwide.
Established in Sweden in 1958, We Effect currently works with 160 local organizations in 25 countries, including the Philippines.
The MOU signing and launch were held in Quezon City October 1.
