Globe Telecom Inc. has upgraded 80 percent of its network in Metro Manila into fifth generation (5G) technology that would deliver faster internet speed and more stable internet connections as compared to 4G.
In a statement, Globe said it has upgraded 884 locations in Metro Manila into 5G-ready sites to make 5G services available to its customers.
“With our aggressive rollouts, our network is getting closer to making the whole of Metro Manila 5G ready. Ultimately, our goal is to make the 5G experience as pervasive as possible,” said Ernest Cu, Globe president and chief executive officer.
Bonifacio Global City, Makati and Ortigas commercial business districts are nearing completion with coverage of 97 percent, 95 percent and 97 percent, respectively.
Among the top nine cities with the most 5G outdoor coverage are San Juan, 91 percent; Pateros, 91 percent; Mandaluyong, 86 percent; Makati, 84 percent; Caloocan, 84 percent; Manila, 83 percent; Marikina, 83 percent; Pasig, 81 percent; and Quezon City, 80 percent.
Efforts are being made to boost further Globe’s 5G readiness in other key cities in the country such as Cebu and Davao. Modernization efforts in Cebu are currently at 61 percent coverage while Davao is with 60 percent coverage, the company said.
For this year, Globe has earmarked P70 billion for capital expenditure, bulk of which is for network expansion in key locations across the country.
This year, Globe is targeting to install 2,000 new cell towers and will increase its fiber rollouts to connect more Filipino homes.
Globe is encouraging customers especially those using the old 3G subscriber identity module (SIM) cards to upgrade to 5G-ready 4G Long Term Evolution SIM cards and 5G-enabled mobile devices to fully enjoy and experience the benefits and advantages of 5G. – Myla Iglesias
