The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) is inviting generation companies to join the competitive selection process (CSP) for the supply of 170 megawatts (MW) of peaking power needed for the summer months.

Meralco said the CSP’s Third Party Bids and Awards Committee has given interested parties until today, January 5, to submit expressions of interest for the contract covering February 26 to July 25 this year.

A pre-bid conference is scheduled on January 12 while the actual bid submission deadline will be on February 2.

Based on the CSP’s official bid invitation, the power supply needed should have 100- percent guaranteed availability for 12 hours daily to cover the peak hours of Meralco from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

More than one supplier can also win the 170 MW CSP but minimum offered contract capacity per bidder was set at 50 MW.

Meralco said based on initial forecast, peak demand in the Luzon grid this year might reach 12,387 MW expected to occur sometime in May 2022 but still subject to changes especially with the possible effects of the resurgence of new coronavirus disease 2019 cases in the country.

Last year, Luzon grid’s peak demand was at 11,640 MW.

Jose Ronald Valles, Meralco head of regulatory management office, earlier said ithe CSP for 170 MW will “help Meralco ensure availability of reliable and cost-competitive supply, which is especially critical during the 2022 dry months and the upcoming national and local elections.”
