The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is targeting to open a widened segment of Lawton Avenue in Taguig this September, and the entire 3.1-kilometer widening project by the end of the year to help further decongest EDSA.
The widening project is composed of three-phased construction works, as part of the EDSA decongestion program. DPWH National Capital Region continued to widen the remaining 1.81-km. forming part of phases 2 and 3.
The 1.34-km. phase 1 segment of Lawton Avenue, covering 5th Avenue to Bayani Road, was inaugurated last November.
Mark Villar, DPWH secretary, said the 350 linear meter widened segment, covering Bayani Road to near Philippine Navy, will be opened to the public next month.
“From the previous 4-lane roadway of Lawton Avenue to a widened 6-lane thoroughfare that will decongest the EDSA as well as reduce travel time from BGC (Bonifacio Global City) to NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) in just 15 minutes,” Villar said recently as he inspected the Fort Bonifacio Nichols Field Road-Lawton Avenue widening project.
Construction works for the phase 2 are now 70.54 percent complete while the phase 3, covering near Philippine Navy to Pasong Tamo Extension,is 26.54 percent done.
DPWH targets to finish the widening project by yearend.
Villar said the project will increase Lawton Avenue’s capacity to accommodate additional volume of vehicles and facilitate faster mobilization of goods and services.
The Lawton Avenue widening follows a part of the alignment of the old Nichols route running roughly southwest to northeast from the interchange of South Luzon Expressway/Skyway to Fifth Avenue and the Manila American Cemetery Memorial.
The project also complements the BGC-Ortigas Center Link Road Project which will improve access to and from the cities of Taguig, Pasig, Makati and Mandaluyong.
