The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the P233-million major flood control project for the low-lying areas of Dulag town in Leyte province.

Nerie Bueno, DPWH region 8 director, said the project dubbed Daguitan-Marabong flood control project  was completed ahead of rainy season to ensure safety of residents of barangays Cabacungan and Fatima previously affected by river overflow in the area.

A total of P233.52 million was spent to complete the project involving the construction of a 700-lineal meter revetment (300 lineal meters at Barangay Cabacungan and 400 lineal meters at Barangay Fatima) and the construction of a 980-lineal meter cut-off channel (560 lineal meters at Barangay Cabacungan and 420 lineal meters at Barangay Fatima).

“These walls and cut-off channels will prevent flooding in surrounding areas, spread of water-borne diseases, and destruction of crops,” said Bueno.

The flood control structures which started construction August last year were originally aimed for completion in June 2020 but completed December 2019.

The DPWH also completed the construction of new access road leading to the famous Ditabuyan Falls in Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija.

Mark Villar, DPWH secretary, said the construction of the two-kilometer road in Barangay Cadaclan will provide better access to tourists visiting the emerging tourism destination.

The project, which was completed within six months since its commencement last June 2019, involved road concreting and construction of grouted riprap.

It was constructed in the total amount of P18.6-million under the 2019 General Appropriations Act .

Aside from the improvement of roads in Pantabangan, DPWH has other infrastructure projects lined up in Nueva Ecija to improve access to social services, boost tourism and stir economic development in the province.
