Mobile and fixed broadband download speeds in the Philippines have improved by 6 percent in November versus the previous month, according to the latest Ookla Speedtest Global Index report.
The report showed that fixed broadband speed improved to 75.02 megabits per second (Mbps) from 71.08Mbps the month before — a 5.54 percent month-to-month improvement.
Mobile speed also increased as the country yielded an average download speed of 40.37Mbps from 38.12Mbps the prior month — a 5.9 percent month-to-month improvement.
The speeds represent an improvement of 848.42 percent and 442.61 percent for fixed and mobile services, respectively, since the Duterte administration began in July 2016.
The President’s announcement to streamline and speed up the issuance of local government unit permits in July 2020 generated a significant increase in permits granted to telcos from July 2020 to October this year vis-í -vis 2019.
Improvement in internet speed is largely attributed to this development as telcos are able to fast-track the building of cellular towers andthe rollout fiber optic network necessary in boosting services and connectivity.
The country’s fixed broadband and mobile internet speeds have posted a month-on-month improvement for the last 18 months, according to Ookla.
Last September, Ookla said the Philippines’ fixed broadband speed ranked 63rd out of 180 countries. For mobile, the country ranked 73rd out of 140 countries.
Out of 50 countries in Asia, the country’s internet speed placed 17th for fixed broadband and 22nd for mobile.
