Fixed broadband and mobile download speeds in the Philippines have improved further last December as compared to November 2021, according to the latest Ookla Speedtest Global Index.
The Ookla report showed that fixed broadband speed in the country improved to 50.26 megabits per second (Mbps) from 46.44Mbps last November.
The latest download speed signifies an 8.22-percent month-to-month and a 9-notch improvement in global ranking for fixed broadband.
Mobile speed also increased as the country yielded a download speed of 19.20Mbps last December from 18.68Mbps the month before. The latest download speed represents a 2.78 percent month-to-month increase in speed for mobile.
The latest speeds are also an improvement of 535.4 percent and 158 percent for fixed broadband and mobile, respectively, since the start of the Duterte administration in July 2016.
Based on global ranking, Philippine fixed broadband speed now ranks 63rd out of 178 countries while the mobile speed ranks 89th out of 138 countries, according to Ookla.
The government has mandated to streamline and speed up the issuance of local government unit permits in July 2020. The improvement on internet speed is largely attributed to this development as telcos are able to fast-track building infrastructure (cellular towers and fiber optic network) necessary in boosting services and connectivity.
Meanwhile, Ookla said its report is now based on median rather than mean download speed.
The median is a measure that captures the typical user’s experience and that presenting the median download speed best reflects the speeds a user is likely to achieve in a market, Ookla said.
In statistical terms, median is less likely to be influenced by outliers than mean, it added.
