DA pushes price freeze on agri products

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is pushing for a price freeze on agri products items slapped with a suggested retail price (SRP) in areas placed under the general community quarantine.

DA Secretary William Dar said the price freeze will protect consumers from overpricing.

Dar said the DA will submit its recommendations next week to the Interagency Task Force (IATF).

A price freeze was imposed on basic and prime commodities last March 8 upon the declaration of a public health emergency. This was lifted on May 6.

Last April, the DA issued a memorandum circular expanding the coverage of the price freeze and imposed SRP on more products.

The price freeze was lifted Pork liempo, medium chicken eggs and cooking oil were added to the price freeze as they were considered as among the commonly bought food items by households.

The expanded list of basic agri-fishery commodities and their respective price per kg include cage cultured milkfish at P162; pond-cultured and fresh-chilled tilapia at P120; imported roundscad at P130; pork pigue and kasim at P190; whole chicken at P130; refined sugar at P50; brown sugar at P45; fresh red onion at P95; fresh imported garlic at P70; fresh local garlic at P120; special imported rice at P51; premium imported rice at P42; well-milled imported rice at P40; regular imported rice at P39; local special rice at P53; premium local rice at P45; well-milled local rice at P40; regular local rice at P33; regular-milled NFA rice at P27; local roundscad at P130 and pork liempo at P225.
