Crop, infra damage hit P1.9B

Damage to agriculture and infrastructure by Typhoon Fabian and the monsoon rains have reached P1.9 billion.

Crop damage climbed to P698.76 million as of 12 noon yesterday, according to the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) disaster risk reduction and mitigation operations center.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported damage to roads and flood-control structures amounted to P1.17 billion as of 6 a.m., also yesterday.

The DA said production loss to 26,994 farmers reached 14,175 metric tons (MT) in 34,029 hectares of agricultural areas in Cordillera, Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol and Western Visayas.

Affected commodities include rice, corn, high value crops, livestock and poultry, fisheries, and agri-infrastructure.

The DA said 12,649 MT of rice valued at P227.94 million were spared as 2,398 hectares have been harvested prior to the effects of the rainfall in Cagayan, Central Luzon and Calabarzon.

The DA also assured transport of agri-fishery commodities remain normal.

The DPWH Bureau of Maintenance said Central Luzon incurred partial damage to public infrastructure of P699.16 million of which P349.96 million was recorded for roads and P301 million for flood-control.

Region 4-A recorded the second-highest infrastructure damage with P224 million followed by the Cordillera Administrative

Region (CAR), P113.5 million; Region 4-B, P65 million; National Capital Region, P39.7 million and; Region 1, P31 million damage cost.

The DPWH said its quick response teams have cleared a total of 32 national roads in Luzonbut six roads remain closed to traffic which include four roads in CAR and two in Region 3 due to soil collapse and flooding. – Jed Macapagal and Myla Iglesias
